Where Others Have Gone Before Us: Active Adult Communities

Boomers who are thinking of relocating as they approach retirement should keep in mind that there is no need to reinvent the wheel on this subject. Other boomers before us, and scads of people in earlier generations, have paved the way. And at the same time real estate developers have been building communities to cater our needs.

Along these lines we are all probably aware of "retirement communities" and "assisted-living communities"--those are places we have learned about as our parents have aged and relocated to those kinds of places. But they are for our parents--not for us (at least not for awhile). What many don't realize is that there are comparable communities for our age group called "55-plus communities" or "active adult communities." These communities, which used to be found primarily in the Sun Belt states such as Arizona and Florida, are rapidly growing in popularity all across the country.

Planners of these communities have analyzed the needs of "empty-nesters," including widows, widowers, divorcees and other single adults, and designed living solutions for them. They come in many shapes and sizes: different amenities, different price levels (condominiums vs. full-sized houses, for example), different locals, and of course different types of clienteles ranging from retired executives to colonies of artists and musicians.
